Heinrich Kulka (1900-1971)

Born in the Moravian town of Litovel in what is now the Czech Republic, Heinrich (Czech: Jindřich) Kulka began studying architecture at the Technical University in Vienna. At the same time, he attended Adolf Loos’s privately run architecture school, and from 1927/28 onwards, Kulka played a central role in almost all of Loos’s designs as his partner. The current exhibition provides a detailed insight into Heinrich Kulka’s own architectural oeuvre before he fled from the Austrian capital. Besides his pre-1938 designs for buildings in Vienna (before he moved to Hradec Králové in Czechoslovakia), the focus is primarily on his work in Bohemia, which closely follows the principles of Raumplan or space design. Kulka completed these projects in the country of his birth before permanently relocating to New Zealand in 1940.

Heinrich (Jindřich) Kulka, narozený v moravské Litovli, začal studovat architekturu na Technické univerzitě ve Vídni. Současně navštěvoval soukromou stavitelskou školu Adolfa Loose a už od roku 1927/28 se významně podílel na téměř všech Loosových návrzích jako jeho partner. Připravovaná výstava se podrobně věnuje samostatné tvorbě Heinricha Kulky před emigrací. Vedle některých vídeňských prací z období před rokem 1938 (první emigrace do Hradce Králové) se soustředí především na jeho stavby realizované v českých zemích, zcela odpovídající myšlence Raumplanu. Tyto projekty dokázal Kulka uskutečnit ve své původní vlasti ještě před definitivní emigrací na Nový Zéland v roce 1940.

On 15 September at 5 p.m., a panel discussion on the topic of ‘Dealing with the work of Heinrich Kulka’ will take place at the Exhibition Centre in the Ringturm (Schottenring 30 / 1010 Vienna). The panel will include architect Hermann Czech (Vienna), architect Prof. Ruggero Tropeano (Zurich), MgA. Jakub Chuchlík (Deputy Mayor of Jablonec, Czech Republic), Stephan Templ (Prague/Vienna) and Ira Bing (Kulka estate, Auckland, New Zealand), Heinrich Kulka’s grandson.
